Volleyball is played for recreation or gym class by almost every American school child. The ease of play and simple rules make it a fun game that is enjoyed everywhere…

A well-structured volleyball training program can increase explosive power, vertical jump height, stamina with speed and agilitiy around the court. This post will focus on the exploits of the boys volleyball players at Willink Middle School in Webster, New York. This post will feature matches between area schools and Pace soccer club. Some boys participate outside of school with tournaments sponsored by Pace Bootlegger. Pace is a member of The Rochester Volleyball Club, which is a parent organization of men and womens, boys and girls volleyball programs in the Greater Western New York Area.

Mmm, I’m gonna try to be a better photographer with a little help from my friends who have given me ideas

I once went golfing with my brother in-law who had all the golf accoutrement’s; gloves, cleats, all the right clubs you name it he had it. I asked him why all the stuff and his reply was that having everything gave him a slight edge over others in his class. The ideas in this post give the photographer that added edge to a sometimes elusive quest for success. Image City Photography Gallery The best thing I ever did for my photography was to get it displayed publicly. When the public views and critiques your work there is a natural inclination to improve especially when you see yourself side by side with some very talented and creative photograpers. See a premiere of my work on high definition aluminum at the current Image City Show from September 9th through October 4th. Come down and say hello at the Artist reception being held on September 11th from 5 to 8:30 pm.

Lens Giant I have never considered the camera body as the most important tool in my arsenal; it’s the quality of the lens that’s the main differentiator. All of the photos shown on this site were taken with a Canon 10D. This camera is four generations behind the technology curve and I have only recently felt that I have out grown it. I also can’t afford $1,500 lenses so what to do? I found Lens Giant and rent some of the best Canon (Nikon also available) lenses around. Going on vacation soon and have reserved the Canon 100-400mm, 100mm Macro, and a 1.4 Canon Extender for a very reasonable price. Otherwise I would have had to come up with about $2,800 and that would have taken out my vacation budget. Lens Giant Rentals is highly rated by their customers and I for one have never been disappointed!

Image Wizards Every story has a beginning, middle and end; snap the shot, process then print it. Face it, most of our images end up and stay in a computer somewhere. Yes there’s your photo sharing sites and you can share all day long. Now that I display my photos in a gallery I need to print and frame them. So I printed on paper, had them matted and placed under museum glass and yes they look good but I was still not satisfied. I wanted my prints to pop as if you were there looking at the scene in real life. One day I was reading a photo magazine and saw this advertisement for printing on High Definition aluminum and decided to give it a try…. All I can say is WOW! I am so excited about this medim that my upcoming showing at Image City Gallery will be a premiere of my work using this high definition aluminum that renders exquisite photographic detail resulting in spectacular must see imagery– it really is like your there! Kayaking is an extremely challenging and physically demanding sport…

It’s also a challenging event for photographers to catch fast action shots and always adapting to the changeable spring time weather conditions.

Strength is key to physical fitness as kayaking requires an ability to do both highly intensive aerobic exercise and steady state cardiovascular exercise. Since kayaking involves getting wet (and staying wet) in a high intensity exercise, kayakers need to prevent hypothermia as well as overheating. As a photographer this is my attempt to catch those magic moments of accomplishment seen in the faces of every competitor.

Rochester Academy of Science – Fossil Section

My son, Nicholas and I are members of this amazing club that takes field trips in search of fossils with Paleontologists that interpret our finds and discoveries…

This post is dedicated to various field trips that we often take with the club as well as other information sources to learn what came before us. On field trips we are accompanied by knowledgeable club members or guest paleontologists who help interpret our finds giving us a view back in time to what early life was like on earth hundreds of millions years ago.

October 6, 2009 – Wards Natural Science This event was an open house of Wards Natural Science, a leading supplier of natural science products to schools. There was a tour of the geology facilities and fossil and mineral collections as well as the opportunity to purchase quality specimens. Many thanks to Dan Krisher for hosting this very successful event.

April 18, 2009 – Murder and Alexander Creeks On this trip we accompanied Professor Gordon Baird from Fredonia College and three of his students. We visited two sites near Darion Lake, New York and spent the day searching for trilobites, corals and sponges, from the Devonian Period, over 400 million years ago.

Oct. 25, 2008 – Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show Every year the Gem and Mineral Section of the Rochester Academy of Science hosts a Gem, Mineral and Fossil show at the Dome Arena in Henrietta, New York. The event is co-sponsored by the Rochester Lapidary Society. This show has a large number of vendors from across the northeast with a huge display of gems and minerals for sale to the public with something of interest for all ages.

Evolution in 5 minutes 48 seconds A video short that starts with the beginning of life on earth to man’s first appearance. Markers for each geologic period appear in the clip. Fossils are pieces of a puzzle that appear in different ages of rock allowing a story to be pieced together as we continue to discover and learn. Combined with modern technology it’s a fascinating journey.

David Evans – Royal Ontario Museum On April 16, 2009 my son Nick and I attended a lecture by David Evans, the Associate Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Royal Ontario Museum. David is an expert on the Crested Duck Bill Dinosaur. The lecture was held at Geneseo College in Geneseo, New York. This was a fascinating insight into the life of the Duck Bill in which David shared his experience last summer in excavating an entire Duck Bill from the province of Alberta last summer. The specimen is currently under restoration at the museum and should be ready for display in about a year from now. The first video is an introduction by David of the construction of the key showcase exhibit, Gordo the Barosaurus. The second is a time lapsed video of Gordo being constructed at the museum and currently on display.

A visit with “Gordo” the Barosaurus The affectionately named “Gordo” the Barosaurus is the key stone dinosaur display at the Royal Ontario Museum. When my son Nicholas and I visited the museum we spent a lot of time with “Gordo” and wanted to make a panoramic image to show everyone how expansive this creature is. To create this image the scene was split into 6 overlapping scenes of which Nick was in 4 of them. Each scene consisted of 3 bracketed exposure shots (18 total) and HDR processed into a final image using Photomatix. All 6 final images were stitched together using Photoshop. As tripods were not allowed in the museum, all photos were taken hand held…..

There is nothing better than video for a full visual experience. Especially when you take your photographs, assemble them in some meaningful way, put them in motion, add some background music and your photos are no longer photos but a true multimedia experience. It took me some time to decide on a web format to present my work and most importantly, to create a discussion around photographic technique with other enthusiasts. Eventually, I decided to use a blogging format to solicit and engage discussion and discovery amongst other photographers on future topics to appear here. As a starting point I have created this post, “galleries”, that contains some of my recent works.

Image City Photography Collection This is a collection of photographs I have had on display at Image City located in Rochester, New York adjacent to the George Eastman House. A premiere of my work, on high definition aluminum, was held at Image City from September 9th through October 4th, 2009. I want to thank all those who came to visit me at the artist reception and during the course of this show. To purchase a print click the shopping cart icon.

Photo Critic  Peter Marr is an expert judge in both local and international photographic competitions. For Image City, Peter has written interpretations for the 2009 September show giving a wonderful sense of each selected photograph. I am honored to have two of my photographs included in Peter’s selections

People In my wedding and portraiture photography I strive to capture the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the people I photograph. It’s an art of capturing images of individuals, couples, families and groups of people to preserve a visual memory. A memory that I can craft into a unique photo album with inspired and imaginative images to be enjoyed repeatedly over a life time in an unforgettable presentation.

Auto Shows Our fascination with the automobile just begs us to photograph them. Cars that have been taken care of through the years are especially fascinating as they capture a time gone by and one can relive that time just by being in their presence.

Aircraft In the age of the Wright Brothers, the idea of flight captured the imagination and fascination as it still does today. There’s nothing like an airshow with a combination of vintage warcraft and modern day fighter jets creating an emotional mix of awe and amazement. I enjoy photographing aircraft to capture images that stir those same emotions.
